Deb Hampson

I am a handloom weaver who specialises in designing and making rag rugs and wall hangings on a wooden floor loom. I learnt to weave in Sweden where the tradition of making and using rag rugs has lasted from the 19th to the 21st century. Apart from being a ‘green’ product when made from re-used material, and the repository of a piece of personal history if some of that material is meaningful to you, each piece I make is a unique, handcrafted item, with an exclusive design and colour way.

I work from images, real, photographed or painted, with a combination of colours that I find inspiring, such as the greens and browns of the Peak District landscapes, the shimmering blues to golds of sky and seascapes and the glorious colour combinations of flowers and grasses. I use different weave techniques and a wide palette of colours to create bright, contemporary designs that look equally good on the floor or the wall, in a modern or period setting, and with any type of floor covering. Commissioned rugs can be made to match, or contrast with, a specific colour scheme in a particular space. I love experimenting with new and traditional weave designs and find the infinite variety of colour and texture available from different kinds of material really exciting.  Almost all the material I use has been collected from people who, like me, have hoarded ‘for a rainy day'. Recycling is a concept that is important to me personally, and making something new that will last many years to come out of something with history feels lovely.

The Swedes have a word to describe this kind of craft: ‘Brukskonst’, which means ‘practical art’ and that is how I like my work to be; beautiful, and useful.

I charge per square metre and the price includes all planning, design, materials, weaving and finishing off. Please contact me at any time to see my work or discuss a project.
